![]() We had about a thirty minute ride to the ruins.Įsben was great and full of information. That’s right! Our previous day had us zip lining through the Honduras jungle for several hours and then staying up to ring in the new year so we were all tired.Īfter disembarking from the ship, we met Esben who walked us to our air conditioned bus. You see, we had to be in the meeting room on the ship at 7:45am, January 1st. This trip was a little rough for us all, even our tour guide Esben was a little tired. Thank you Lilla for a wonderful day and for letting us meet and spend time with your family, we thoroughly enjoyed your hospitality and company. I cannot recommend enough this family business which will delight you and deepen your knowledge of the ancient and modern Mayan culture. Being able to have direct contact with the native people and converse with them has been a highlight of our trip to the Mahahual area of the Yucatan. The tour included a meal with the family, traditional foods and we tried our hand at making tortillas and grinding chocolate beans, all of the dishes were explained to us, most of the family had a good knowledge of English, especially Lilla and her sister. Our visit to the ruins deepened our knowledge of the Mayan history in this area, Lilla added many antidotes and particulars as only someone who has studied the culture and is part of it can do Lilla grew up in the area and played in the ruins as a child and she led us to parts of the ruins that most visitors do not go to, her expert knowledge and personal interest made it such an educational experience. BUT! We were very lucky to find this Mayan Family Tour company SAKBEJ, with whom we were able to arrange a private tour, we could not have been happier with our tour and day with Lilla.Ĭhacchoben has a different history than the other Mayan sites. ![]() ![]() We looked at a couple of different companies that provide tours of Chacchoben, most of whom are preoccupied with serving cruise ships that dock in Mahahual. We had two teens and they were entertained. We were very happy to have found Native Choice and would highly recommend this to any travelers. We would have loved to have spent additional time here as they had massage, lounge chairs, and a crystal clear lake to enjoy. The company has a resort along Bacchalar lagoon complete with lunch and drinks - amazing food and a very relaxing experience. We walked with several others to the location and although we thought we were late, this company plans their day around the arrival of the cruise ships. This area unlike others we visited was not sketch and felt like a working Mexican town with charm. Due to a shortened day from our cruise company, our lagoon excursion part of the trip was cut short and we would have loved to have spent more time relaxing here - like 3 hours more.īoth Mayan Ruin tour guides David and Elliot were exceptional, air conditioned van was comfortable, this company has it together!!! The only thing they are not able to do is to pick you up right at the port so you'll need to walk to their office through town just about a 15 min walk. If you have a particular Mexican port you want to visit, you’ll need to make sure you look for sailings from a port that serves that side of the country.Chaccobean Extreme Adventure which included tour of Mayan ruins and stop off at the Bacchalar Lagoon. Mexico is essentially divided in half when it comes to cruising, and while some itineraries might cruise along the Panama Canal and therefore be able to visit both coasts, these are longer trips and so are rare. ![]() Cruises to Cozumel and ports on the eastern side tend to depart from ports in Florida and Texas, while cruises to Ensenada and ports on the west side will depart from Los Angeles or San Francisco. Cruises to Mexico have different departure ports based on which coast of Mexico you’re sailing to. ![]()
